What does a typical day as a groundsman look like?
Honestly, there is never a typical day of work for the Grounds Team. Yes, there are certain tasks that we do more regularly than others; such as keeping on top of the lawns and maintaining the sports pitches, but with the changing of seasons and unpredictable weather we have to be adaptable. It's important that we keep on top of the work in whatever environment we are in - all seasons!
What’s the most satisfying part of the job?
For me the most rewarding part is completing a task and being a part of the transformation, from what seems like a big job initially and a lot of mess, to a neat and clean finish which is presentable and ready for our guests to enjoy. Whether it's maintaining the gardens of our Airbnbs, clearing out flower beds from leaves and weeds, or cutting an overgrown hedge with precision. I find it all extremely satisfying.
What's one thing that our readers might not know about role?
A surprising aspect of the role, not just for me but the grounds team as a whole, is to not only maintain the grounds and gardens of the estate, but the conservation of the environment around us. We have planted many trees as part of our woodland project and have created wild grass areas too. Being a part of the Odney Club is like being a part of a family so we also assist other departments as and when needed, coming together to run anything from corporate events to guest events, such as Rock the Manor and Family Fun Day.
What is the team's main focus at the moment?
As a team we have so much going on! The main focus always is making sure our guests have the best experience walking around the estate grounds. Just to name a few of the projects we have on at the moment, we will be installing a lot of fences and also creating a new Archery Arena, which will consist of planting 630 plants to enclose the Archery Arena with a hedge. In addition we are dredging the silt out from the pond down at the water garden, to increase water flow to improve the ecological value of the pond.
What’s the one project or area you're most proud of?
I’m most proud of the SBMC and River Garden Lawns, working hard to keep them looking their best for conferences and events we have here at The Odney Club. I particularly enjoy creating neat stripes on the lawns. I'm also helping to prepare the Cricket Square ready for game day and the new season. Generally, it’s always a proud moment getting positive feedback from guests about the look of the grounds and gardens.
For our fellow green thumbs, what song would you recommend whilst gardening?
I listen to a wide range of songs whilst gardening but a go-to for me personally has to be ‘Swim Good’ by Frank Ocean. It has a chilled vibe and good beat that keeps me motivated while I work.
Thank you Brad! Stay tuned for more chats with our team, where you'll get a glimpse into the passion and creativity that brings The Odney Club to life.
